In my free time I like to travel by bike!  I prefer off-road paths that traverse high passes or unfamiliar kinds of terrain. Sometimes I use panniers, but on rougher tracks I like soft bags that attach directly to the bike frame without a rack.  Here's a short piece I wrote for my favorite bikepacking magazine, Bunyan Velo:

KYRGYZSTAN AND TAJIKISTAN

In 2016, André and I flew into Osh, Kyrgyzstan, and rode a large high altitude loop through the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan.  We rode from Osh to Sary-Tash, crossed the Tajik border and set off west towards Khorog right after Lake Karakul.  When we hit Khorog, we rode along the Afghanistan border and then followed the Pamir dirt highway to cross Ak-Baytal (4,655m) and head back to Osh. It was our longest time without encountering another person (6 days) and our longest time without a shower (11 days). André lost 27 pounds in 3 weeks!  It's a fantastic route that rivals the Manali-Leh bikepacking classic and you'll have the five hundred miles to yourself. Get in touch if you're interested in GPS coordinates.

MOROCCO

In 2015, we rode from Marrakech to the Sahara desert through oases and the High Atlas.

ALASKA

Here are some pictures from two Alaskan ultra-endurance snow bike "races" - The Susitna 100 (which I finished in 33 hours!) and the Homer Epic - and a ride to the Knik Glacier.

INDIA

In 2014, Andre and I flew into Delhi and hopped a bus to Manali. We rode from Manali to Leh, over Kardung La (5,359m) to the Pakistani border, and then to the Chinese border at Pangong Lake.

GUATEMALA

In 2014, I went with Chloe Armstrong to Guatemala. We rode around the Western Highlands and climbed Volcán Acatenango.

ARIZONA AND UTAH

A spring break trip to Arizona and Utah with Chloe Armstrong. We saw some dino tracks, a big rattler and we bikepacked the White Rim trail in two days.

TIBET AND NEPAL

André and I went to Tibet, tried to ride to Everest base camp from the Tibetan side, were thwarted by the Chinese military, flew to Kathmandu and mostly carried our bikes to Lukla from the Nepali side.  Then we went for a monsoon season mud trudge bikehike over Thorung La (5,416m) and around the Annapurna circuit.

ECUADOR, PERU, AND BOLIVA

I flew into Quito with André. Over three months we rode to Cotopaxí, through Ecuador into Peru, through the Cordillera Blanca to
Cusco and on to the salt flats of Bolivia. We were joined for a couple weeks in Ecuador by Florian Block.
